What is Support at Home?

How is it different from Home Care?

Support at Home is a Government-funded service designed to help older Australians live safely, comfortably and independently in their own homes.

Through this program, we provide home care support to make everyday life easier, help you maintain your independence and deliver the care you need.

The program offers support ranging from basic assistance to more intensive care, so your services can grow and adapt as your needs change.

How much does Support at Home cost?

Under the Support at Home program, clinical care (such as nursing and allied health) is fully funded by the Government.

Most people receiving support will need to contribute to the cost of independence and everyday living services such as help with meals, cleaning or transport. The amount you pay will depend on your individual circumstances.

Depending on your care needs, you could receive up to $78,000 per year in base funding with potential for additional support.

What support can I expect? Can I choose my services and carers?

Your Support at Home journey begins with a personalised assessment to understand your goals and daily needs. From there we create a care plan just for you.

You can choose and have input into the services you receive including the carers who provide them, based on your assessed needs. If your needs change, your plan can be updated.

Common questions

Is Support at Home the same as the Home Care Package program?

From 1 November 2025, the new Support at Home program replaces the existing Home Care Packages (HCP) and Short-Term Restorative Care programs.

Under the Support at Home program, there will be improved access to services, products, equipment and home modifications to help older people to remain healthy, active and socially connected to their community.

Who is eligible for Support at Home?

The Support at Home Program is available to individuals who:

Are aged 65 or older (50 or older for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people, or people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness).
Need home care assistance with daily tasks such as personal care, household chores, or accessing health services.

How is Support at Home tailored and organised for me? How will my care be arranged and managed?

Your care will be arranged and managed based on your individual needs. You will work with your provider to develop a plan that suits your lifestyle, preferences, and goals, ensuring the services you receive are personalised and coordinated.

How are my Support at Home services and costs determined?

Your aged care assessment will determine which level of services (1–8) you are eligible for. Each level comes with a quarterly budget you can use for services.

Support at Home quarterly budgets range from:

Level 1: $2,750 per quarter or $11,000 annually
Level 8: $19,500 per quarter or $78,000 annually

The higher your level of need, the larger your package and the more the government contributes.

Will I need to pay for Support at Home services?

Your contribution depends on your income, assets, and pension status.

Full pensioners pay the least
Part pensioners and Commonwealth Seniors Health Card holders pay a moderate rate
Self-funded retirees pay the most.

Financial hardship assistance may be available if needed.

How much will I pay for different services?

Clinical care (e.g., nursing): Fully covered by the government – no contribution required.
Independence supports (e.g., showering, transport): Contribution ranges from 5% to 50%, depending on your income.
Everyday living supports (e.g., cleaning): Contribution ranges from 17.5% to 80%, depending on your income.

Can I change my Support at Home provider?

Yes. You have the right to choose your provider and can change providers if your needs or preferences change.
